Product Standards for Export


Export potential of a product is dependent on the quality of the products to be traded. So quality assurance is a major area where an exporter has to give emphasis by observing the specified standards. Export requires compliances of two types of quality standards one at the National level and the second at International level.

These standards vary from product to product. Agricultural products, marine products and organic products require different standards prescribed by respective commodity boards Export promotion Councils and such other authorised agencies.

International standards includes those laid down by CODEX commission International office of  epizootics International convention on plant varieties International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM)

National Standards

National standards in order to meet international standards

  • Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

Apart from the above standards there are product specific standards and compliances are required for various products
Example

  • For meat products - MEAT FOOD PRODUCTS ORDER
  • For milk and milk products - MILK AND MILK PRODUCT  ORDER

International Standards

The international organisation has set minimum standards for trade by way of various certification schemes such as

  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point HACCP
  • Health safety and Quality control (HSQC)
  • There are various Product specific standards given in CODEX ALIMENTARIUS
