Tariff rate for vanilla

The rate of tariff related to vanilla beans and vanilla powder is 30% for the year 2004-05. No significant import seems to have been made in the case of vanilla but synthetic vanillin is imported. The very high price for natural vanilla and availability of cheap synthetic vanilla through import, limits the import of natural vanilla from other countries at a lower level. If the prices become stable over a period of time and the price spread between natural and synthetic vanilla narrows down, there is possibility of vanilla imports into India. However, none of the free trade partners of India are major producers of vanilla at present. This is an encouraging situation for the state.
