Trade Pattern (Vanilla)

Export Pattern

Global Scenario

The world production of vanilla was 6,669 MT in 2004, of which 4,111 MT was exported. The global market has shrunk from 5,270 tonnes in 2003 to 4,111 tonnes in 2004. About 90% of the world vanilla production comes from the Indian Ocean Island Nations such as Madagascar, Indonesia and Comoros. These countries also dominate in the export of vanilla in the world.  Papua New Guinea was the leading exporter in 2004 with about 21 percent of volume valued at Rs.143 crores followed by Indonesia (18%), Madagascar (16%), USA (12%) and Singapore (5%). Even though USA and Singapore are not the major producing countries. However in export value Madgaskar was on top with 24.7% followed by Papua New Guinea (12.2%) and USA (10.3%), Germany (9.9%), France (9.2%) had higher share in value compared to volume of exports due to export of value added products. The following table shows the country-wise export of vanilla in the world as per FAO statistics for the year 2004.

India's export of vanilla

India's share in vanilla export is insignificant. India exports almost the entire production to other countries in particular to USA, UK, France and Germany. During the year 2000-01, India exported 111.94 tonnes of vanilla valued at Rs. 1.94 crores as against 68.40 tonnes valued at Rs.1.96 crores in 2002-03. In 2004-05, India exported 52.82 tonnes of vanilla valued at Rs. 30.09 crores. but in 2005-06 it shows an increase in quantity but the value declined by 9.73 crores. This was a share blow to the vanilla cultivators due to price crash.

The following table shows the details of export of vanilla from India during 2000-01 to 2006-07.
