Trade Pattern (Ginger)Export pattern (Ginger)World trade in ginger was 3,34,433 tonnes during the year 2005 of which India's share was 3.26 per cent. China was the major producer and exporter in the world with 71.74 percent of market share. Other exporting countries included Nepal (5.55%), Thailand (3.16%), Nigeria (2.80%), Netherlands (2.03%), Philippiness (1.73%), Brazil (1.02%), Ethiopia (0.79%), United Arab Emirates (0.78%), and Taiwan, Province of China (0.77%). The main exporters of dried ginger were India, China and Nigeria. The latter two were the major suppliers to Europe. In ginger oil and oleoresin trade, India dominate with about 50 per cent of the market share. India's major markets were West Asia and the Gulf countries. Other important exporters were China, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Ginger produced in the northeastern states of India has high fibre content and is exported mainly to Pakistan and Bangladesh as fresh ginger for vegetable purpose. However the volume of export of ginger is seem to fluctuate depending upon the crop in other major producing countries. China and Thailand were the major ginger sources for most of the importing countries. Brazil and Nigeria provided ginger to the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands. The following pie diagram shows the shares of leading exporters of ginger in terms of quantity during 2005. China was the top exporter with a major share of 72 percent followed by Nepal (6%), India (3%), Thailand (3%), Nigeria (3%) and Netherlands (2%).

The following bar diagram shows the export of ginger in terms of quantity during 2001-02 to 2005-06 from India. The export earnings went up from Rs. 20.19 crores in 2001-02 to Rs.55.63 crores in 2004-05. It declined to Rs. 46 crores in 2005-06.
