Coffee is the most traded agricultural product in the World. India was the seventh largest producer of coffee in the world. India produced 2.76 lakh tonnes of coffee in 2004-05, which accounted for 4.07% of the world output. India improved her share to 4.66% in 2005-06 with an estimated production of 2.81 lakh tonnes.

World export

Total global coffee export in 2004 was 61.23 lakh tonnes of which 92.45 per cent was green coffee and the rest was roasted coffee.  Brazil was the top coffee exporter with 23 per cent share followed by Vietnam (16%), Columbia (9%), Indonesia (5.62%) and Germany (5.21%).  India has 11th rank with 2.3 percent share of global coffee export. Brazil holds first place in export of green coffee with 25 per cent while Germany holds first place in the export of roasted coffee with 21 per cent. 

India exported 3 per cent of green coffee and 0.01 per cent of roasted coffee and is ranked 11th  and 69th positions respectively. The corresponding figures are given in the following table.

The global export share of green and roasted coffee in 2004 is shown in the following figure.  Here, Brazil and Vietnam together accounted for 39 per cent of the global export. Columbia (9%), Indonesia (6%) and Germany (5%) had a total share of 20%. The other 129 countries constituted 41 per cent of the export.

India’s export

The export of coffee from India was ranging from 1.53 to 1.70 lakh tonnes during the period 2000-01 to 2006-07.  It declined from 1.65 lakh tonnes valued at Rs.803.48 crores in 2000-01 to 1.58 lakh tonnes valued at Rs.1124.75 crores in 2005-06.  The year 2003-04 witnessed rise in exports to 1.70 lakh tonnes. The major item of export was coffee neither roasted nor decaffeinated with 99.81 percent share in 2005-06.  The other coffee items exported by India included (i) not roasted but decaffeinated coffee (ii) roasted not decaffeinated coffee (iii) roasted decaffeinated coffee, and  (iv) other coffee

The following figure depicts the variations in annual export of coffee from India during the period from 2000-01 to 2005-06.

Indian coffee is exported to 74 countries.  However, the major destination of India’s coffee export was Europe.  Among them, Italy was the leading importer with 53360 tonnes accounting for 33.88 per cent of the coffee export in 2005-06, followed by Germany (12.09%), Belgium (7.32%), Spain (6.60%) and Russia (5.30%).

The top five importers including Italy, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Russia together accounted for 65.19 % of India's exports in 2005-06. Other 69 minor importers accounted for 35% of India's export of coffee, as may be seen from the following piechart.
