Global production of raw cashew nuts

However India has been pushed to the third position in 2002 by Vietnam and Nigeria. Till 2000 India was the largest producer and exporter of cashew. Her share in production during 2006 was 18 per cent, Vietnam (30%) and Nigeria (20%). Brazil (8%), Indonesia (4%) and Philippines (4%) are the other notable producers. During 2006, Vietnam produced 9.42 lakh tonnes of raw cashews followed by Nigeria with 6.36 lakh tonnes. India's output stood at 5.73 lakh tonnes.

The global cashew nut production rose from 19.04 lakh tonnes in 2001 to 31.03 lakh tonnes in 2006. The cashew nut production in Vietnam in 2001 was 2.93 lakh tonnes which increased to 9.42 lakh tonnes in 2006. The corresponding rise in Indian production was from 4.50 lakh tonnes to 5.73 lakh tonnes.

Export pattern

World export of cashew kernels

The world export of cashew kernels was 2.88 lakh tonnes in 2005 of which India was the market leader with 43.28 percent of the volume and 42.68 percent of the value. India was followed by Vietnam with 28.25 percent of the quantity and 27.70 percent of value. Other important exporters included Brazil (13.21%), Netherlands (8.24%), Indonesia ( 1.20%), Belgium (1.12%), USA (0.80%), United Republic of Tanzania (0.59%), United Kingdom (0.44%), and Mozambique (0.40%). World export of cashewnuts with shell

The world export of cashew nuts with shell was 4.89 lakh tonnes in 2005 of which Côte d'Ivoire was the market leader with 34.34 percent percent of the volume and 26.70 percent of the value. Côte d'Ivoire was followed by Guinea-Bissau with 19.12% of the quantity and 26.04 percent of value. Other important exporters included Indonesia (13.49%), Benin (8.77%), United Republic of Tanzania (6.62%), Ghana (6.39%), Mozambique (4.31%), Nigeria (3.53%), Kenya (1.03%) and Guinea with 0.87 percent. India's export pattern (cashew kernels)

The total export of cashew kernels from India during 2006-07 was 1,18,540 MT valued at Rs 2,455.17 crores. In 2005-06 export was 1,14,143 MT valued at Rs 2,514.86 crore. The Share of agricultural products in the total export earnings of the country during 2006-07 is 4.93% and cashew kernels ranked third among them contributing 0.44% of the total foreign exchange earnings of the country through exports. The average unit export price realised during 2006-07 was Rs. 207.12 per kg against Rs. 220.33 per kg during 2005-06 showing an decrease of 6 percent. USA continued to be the largest market for Indian cashew with 39 perent of total quantity of cashew kernels exported during 2006-07. But a decline of 10 percent both in value and quantity reported was observed compared to 2004-05. While Netherlands improved its position both in terms of quantity and value. UAE overtook UK during 2005-06. Exports to Japan, France, Saudi Arabia, Germany registered an increase and export to UK, Russia and Norway registered an decrease. Export of cashew nut shell liquid

The export of cashew nut shell liquid from India during 2006-07 declined to 6139 tonnes valued at Rs. 10.29 crores compared to 6463 tonnes valued at Rs. 7.21 crore during 2005-06. While the quantity exported declined by around 5 percent, export value increased by around 42.72 percent over the previous year. USA is the prime market, which shared 77.87% in quantity and 71.47% in value during 2006-07.

USA accounted for 77.86 percent of the quantity and 71.43 percent of the value during 2006-07. A declining trend was observed in the export of cashew nut shell liquid from India during
last three years. During 2006-07 the decrease was 5.01% in quantity but an increase of 42.72% in
value. However the share of Korean republic rose from 9.10 percent to 18.16 percent during this period. The following table shows the the country- wise export of cashew nut shell liquid from India 2005-06 and 2006-07.
