Trade Pattern (small cardamom)



Kerala's export Pattern

Export of small cardamom from Kerala declined from 825 tonnes in 2000-01 to 454 tonnes during 2005-06.  The corresponding fall in value was from Rs. 42.41 crores to Rs.14.46 crores. India’s export of small cardamom also declined during this period from 1,545 tonnes to 875 tonnes.  The export value also declined from Rs. 84.68 crores to Rs. 27.01 crores. Kerala’s share in India’s cardamom export rose from 53.40% in 2000-01 to 69.65% in 2002-03. Thereafter it declined to 51.89% in 2005-06. Same pattern is seen in the share of export value also. Kerala exported 4.87 per cent of the total cardamom production of 9,329 tonnes in 2005-06.

The share of Kerala’s cardamom export is shown in the following figure.  Kerala's share ranged between 52% and 70% in volume and 50 to 69% in value.  The following table shows the Kerala's percentage share of export of small cardamom during 2000-01 to 2005-06.
