Trade Pattern (Cardamom)Export patternIndia's export of small cardamom was 650 tonnes in 2006-07 of which Saudi Arabia was the leading importer with 63% of the volume and 70% of the value. The other leading importers were Japan (5.60%), Belgium (5.02%), Malaysia (3.08%), U.K (2.97%), Kuwait (2.20%), South Africa (2.14%), Bahrain (1.17%), Oman (1.05%) and Greece (0.92%). In value terms, Japan was the second largest importer in 2005-06 (21.77%) which fell to 4.08% in 2006-07. UK (2.63%), Kuwait (2.14%), Malaysia (1.99%) and Belgium (1.84%) were the other notable importers during 2006-07. Country-wise export share of small cardamom from India during 2005-06 to 2006-07

India's export of small cardamom The export of cardamom from India increased from early nineties and reached a peak level of 1545 tonnes in 2000-01 but it declined roughly by half in 2005-06. The export of cardamom (small) declined to 875 tonnes valued at Rs 27.01 crores during 2005-06 because of the severe competition from Guatemala. However, exports constituted only a small fraction of the production. It was hovering around 6% during the last three years, in contrast to approximately 15% in 2000-01. India exported 5.83 per cent of the total production of 15,000 tonnes of small cardamom in 2005-06. India's export of small cardamom during the period 2001-02 to 2005-06

The export pattern of small cardamom of India for the period 2000-01 to 2005-06 is shown in the following bar chart. It shows that the export of small cardamom has declined over the years. 2005-06 witnessed slight recovery in exports by 225 tonnes.
