Production pattern of pineapple

Pineapple is a very important tropical fruit which is traded globally in significant quantity. Thailand, Philippines, Brazil and China are the main pineapple producers in the world which accounted for nearly 50 % of the total output in 2004. (FAO, 2004) Other important producers include India, Nigeria, Kenya, Indonesia, México and Costa Rica. Total world production of pineapple was 15 million tonnes in 2004 (FAO, 2004). Thailand became the leader in production in 1975, while China snatched the fourth place from India in 1999. India's production was 1.3 million tons in 2004.

Export pattern of Pineapple

The world export of pineapple was 22.01 lakh tonnes in 2005 of which Costa Rica was the market leader with 41.11 percent of the volume and 27.38 percent of the value. The export of Costa Rica had increased by two fold between 2000 and 2005 from 3.22 lakh tonnes to 9.05 lakh tonnes. The other important exporters were Belgium with 11.61 percent of the quantity followed by Philippines (9.57%), Côte d'Ivoire (6.00%), Netherlands (4.51%), USA ( 3.66%), Ecuador (3.62%), France (2.70%), Ghana (2.68%), Honduras (2.49%) and Guatemala (1.83%). India exports only very small quantity. The following table shows the country-wise export of pineapple in the world during 2005.

Export pattern of canned pineapple

Canned pineapple is the most important product in pineapple trade. Its consumption has been going up steadily in the world. Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia accounted for nearly 72 percent of the canned pineapple supply in the world market as may be seen from the following table. The total export in 2004 was 11.42 lakh tonnes of canned pineapple valued at Rs. 3114 crores. India is not a significant player in this segment.

Export pattern of pineapple juice concentrated

The gobal export of pineapple juice (concentrated) in 2004 was 94302 tonnes valued at Rs. 411 crores of which Indonesia was the market leader with 29.44 percent of the volume and 23.30 percent of the value. The other important exporters were Germany with 13.23 percent of the quantity followed by South Africa (11.97%), Brazil (9.88%),Kenya (5.39%), Belgium (3.70%), Singapore ( 3.63%), Ukraine (3.24%), Honduras (3.04%), and Spain (2.76%). Here also India's share is insignificant. The following table shows the country-wise export of concentrated pineapple juice in the world during 2004.

India's export

India is not a significant exporter of pineapple. India's export of pineapple during 2003-04 to 2005-06 ranged between 0.54 lakh tonnes and 1.16 lakh tonnes. The corresponding export earnings varied from Rs. 13 to Rs. 54 lakh.
