Export opportunities

The IPC projections of exportable surplus and the carryover stocks present a disturbing picture as far as India is concerned.  The projected exportable surplus is 247,254 tonnes for the year 2006. It is striking to observe substantial volume of exportable surplus in ASEAN to the tune of 140570 tonnes followed by Brazil (49570) and SAARC (46505). India has a projected tradable surplus of 37240 tonnes constituting 15.06% of the world exportable surplus. The projected export for 2006 was only 183,050 tonnes, which constitutes only 74% of the exportable surplus, leaving a stock of 64205 tonnes to be carried forward to the year 2007. While India’s export potential is 15.06%, her projected export is less than half of it, which constitutes 10% of the projected world export. Much againist these projections, the availability of pepper in international markets decreased which resulted in steep rise in prices during september - october 2006.

Domestic demand

Domestic consumption of pepper has been hovering around 35000- 40000 tonnes in India.

Export demand for pepper

The pattern of global demand for black pepper has been undergoing changes. The consumer preference for value added form of pepper such as white pepper, pepper in brine, oleoresin and curry powder are on the rise.

The table below states that demand for primary form of pepper has been shifted to value added form.
