Export earnings

Total export earnings from livestock, poultry and related products was Rs. 8,733 crore in 2005-06, of which meat and meat products accounted for Rs. 2,676 crore. Meanwhile, as shown in table below the exports of processed animal food products grew to Rs. 4,063 crore during 2006-07. However, processed animal food exports recorded a diverse trend in terms of quantity and value compared to 2003-04. There was a rapid increase in the quantity exported from 0.29 million MT in 2001-02 to 1.25 million MT in 2006-07. There was also a significant increase in value from 1,500 crore to Rs. 4,063 crore during the same period.

The above table shows that buffalo meat accounted for the highest share in quantity (82%) and value (74%). There was a sharp decline in the quantity of poultry products exported compared to previous year (2004-05). However, dairy products accounted for over 18% of the value of exports.

The change in the composition of the export of processed meat products is shown by the following pie charts. The share of buffalo meat remained rather unchanged from 84% to 81% during the 5-year period ending 2005-06, which shows a clear trend towards its dominance in exports. There was only a marginal decline in the share of value from 76% to 73% due to higher prices. One notable feature is the rise in the share of dairy products from 12% to 19% and fall in the share of poultry products from 9% to 5%.
