ANIMAL HUSBANDRY INFORMATIONPriceMilk price comparisonThe average price of milk in Kerala for the last five years is presented in figure below. Compared to 2005-06 there was an increase in the price milk during 2006-07. The increase is in the case of buffalo milk (3%) was more compared to cows milk (2.31%). As the graph depicts the average price of both cow and buffalo milk in Kerala has increased from Rs. 12.70 and Rs. 15.10 respectively in 2001-02 to Rs. 15.05 and Rs. 19.60 respectively in 2006-07. Skimmed milk powder (SMP)India annually produces roughly 1.5 lakh tonnes of bulk Skimmed milk powder. Due to increased demand the average price of SMP in the country has risen from 62 Rs./kg in 2001-02 to nearly 112 Rs./kg in 2006-07. Price spreadThe efficiency of milk marketing depends on the price spread of milk. It is the difference between the price paid by consumer and the price received by the farmer. If the price spread is small the marketing efficiency is high. The extent of price spread experienced by the farmers in the cooperative sector under MILMA is given in the following table.
