Production, availability and consumption of eggThe per capita availability of egg in India is still very low at 42 eggs/year corresponding to the world average of 147 eggs. The Government of India has set a target for achieving production over 52 billion eggs by 2011-12, at a growth rate of 4.3 percent. The requirement of egg in Kerala has grown from 4,217 million nos. in 2002-03 to 4,362 million nos. in 2006-07. The production of egg in Kerala is sufficient to meet only 27 percent of the domestic requirement. The state is largely dependent on external sources for maintaining the supply of meat. The internal availability is more or less around 15 gm per capita per day. The production of eggs was almost stagnant (around 2,000 million) between 1993-94 and 2001-02. But the production recorded steep decline since 2001-02. The production dipped to 1,199 million in 2006-07. This is shown in the following figure. Last updated: 28-3-2008 |
