Dairy market

India is the largest producer of milk with 90.7 million tonnes in 2004-05. There are only two countries, namely, India (14%) and the United States (12%), which account for more than 10 percent of the world milk production. The per capita availability of milk in India has increased to 231 gm/day during 2004-05 from 202 gm/day in 1996-97.

Organised dairy industry accounts for 13% of the milk produced in India. The rest of the milk is either consumed at farm level, or is sold as fresh, non-pasteurised milk through unorganised channels. The share of organised industry is expected to rise rapidly-especially in the urban regions.

The overall growth rate of the dairy industry in India is 4%, which is almost 3 times the average growth rate of the dairy industry in the world. Milk processing level is 35% i.e. 13% in the organized and 22% in the unorganised sector.

Major markets for Indian dairy products outside the Asia region include Germany and USA. In Asia, major markets include UAE, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Yemen and Kuwait.

Dairy Cooperatives

Dairy Cooperatives account for the major share of processed liquid milk marketed in the country. Milk is processed and marketed by 170 Milk Producers’ Cooperative Unions, which federate into 15 State Cooperative Milk Marketing Federations. By the end of third phase of Operation Flood Programme about 72,700 dairy cooperative societies with 93 million farmer members were organised.

The country has at present about 1 lakh organized primary village dairy cooperatives with an aggregate membership of 1.1 crore producers. The co-operative milk procurement crossed 20 million kg/day in 2004-05. Over the years, brands created by cooperatives have become synonymous with quality and value. Brands like Amul (GCMMF), Vijaya (AP), Verka (Punjab), Saras (Rajasthan), Nandini (Karnataka), Milma (Kerala) and Gokul (Kolhapur) are among those that have earned customer confidence.

In Kerala there are 3243 dairy co-operatives including 2404 Anand pattern societies functioning under Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF). MILMA represents more than 7.63 lakh dairy farmers who have organised 2404 Anand Pattern Cooperative Societies (as on Aug 2004). It has helped in ensuring better returns to the dairy farmers. It also represents 10 dairies handling 9.96 lakh litres of milk/day, 14 chilling plants, two cattle feed plants, a milk powder plant, an established training centre and 5000 distribution outlets. Of the total APCOs registered, only 2375 are functional. The average milk procured/day/society is 344 litres.

To bridge the supply demand gap and to cater the demand of making value added products Kerala relies on outside states. Presently the milk is imported from AAVIN and KMF. The total import during 2005-06 was 500 lakh litres against 625 lakh litres during 2004-05.

The veterinary services rendered by KCMMF are noteworthy. They have a well-established Veterinary Wing at Thiruvanamthapuram and Ernakulam Regional Milk Unions. During 2005, services were provided through 13 regular and 39 emergency routes and 0.33 lakh animals were treated. KCMMF has sold 0.78 lakh MT of cattle feed and 1593 MT of ghee during 2005.

Meat market

Global meat market is expected to rise by 7% to 22 million tonnes in 2007. While, trade prospects for all varieties of meat appear to be favorable, the beef and poultry sector are set to account for 80% of these trade gains, largely due to lifting of ban on trading of meat due to outbreak of animal-diseases. The world meat market for various meat varieties is given below.
