Market potential

Since Asia continues to be a large net importer of dairy products, India could be a competitive exporter if Asian countries liberalized its dairy trade. India could emerge as a significant exporter of milk powder to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, which are large importers of the product.

In India the growth and future potential in the dairy sector have resulted in significant investments into this sector in the last decade. Total investment in the dairy sector during 1991-2002 was around US$ 3.3 billion (Rs. 14,850 crore), of which foreign investment was of US$ 245.5 million (Rs. 11,074.75 crore). Current consumer trends like increasing urbanisation indicate that this segment will continue to be attractive in future.

The growth in urban areas has been higher at about 15 percent per annum. The ice cream market in India is estimated to be about US$ 199 million (Rs. 895.5 crore) per annum. India’s total milk production is projected to grow to 108 million tonnes by end of 2007 according to the tenth five-year plan estimates. India is on the verge of assuming an important position in global dairy industry.

Promotional measures

For sustained increase in farmer’s income and employment, we have no option but to raise the productivity of our livestock through scientific breeding, optimum feeding and cost-effective management.

Adequate attention has not been made for improving the quality of animal husbandry products, which was a major constraint for large-scale access to international markets. However, it is significant to note that National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has taken initiatives to get HACCP and ISO certification for dairy plants in India. In Kerala all dairy plants of MILMA have obtained ISO certification.
