Market demand

Dairy

World demand for skim milk powder is increasingly being replaced by whole milk powder, which is preferred for the reconstitution of liquid milk, and by powdered whey, which is used in the manufacture of other dairy products or non-dairy foodstuffs and particularly animal feeds. The ingredients market in general is a highly buoyant sector, based on high value-added products whose extraction ensures a higher return on the original raw material, milk.

Demand forecasts for milk, for the period up to 2020 indicates that demand of milk is likely to go up by nearly 45 million tonnes. Similarly, among other milk products the demand for ghee would go up by 12 million tonnes and curd by 3 million tonnes by the year 2019-2020.

Poultry

India’s states and regions are diverse in terms of economic factors affecting food demand, including population, income, and urbanization. High incomes and higher degree of urbanization in the South are supportive of the region’s rapid gains in poultry demand, supply, and commercialization. The northern region, where the poultry industry is not growing as rapidly as in the South or West, does, however, have areas of high income and urbanization, particularly in Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab, that can support growth in poultry demand.

Meat and meat products

India has over 2000 markets where livestock are traded. Livestock markets are under the jurisdiction of the state governments although the direct operation and supervision would generally fall within the purview of the local bodies.

Poultry meat, which is showing the fastest growth in consumption according to available information, seems to have broad regional acceptance. Poultry meat is also generally low cost relative to mutton and fish. Low poultry prices in South India, due largely to the prevalence of poultry integrators in the region, are reported to have stimulated rapid growth in consumption.

The metro cities and urban areas dominate the market for poultry products in India. Nearly 75% of egg production and almost 100% of broiler production is consumed in urban and semi urban areas.
