India’s imports of milk and milk products

India’s import of milk and milk based products significantly increased to 106.16 crores in 2006-07 compared to Rs. 34.56 crores in the previous year. While Butter and other fats contributed to the major share of imports (64.04%) during 2006-07, in the preceeding year the major contributor was Cheese and curd (nearly 36%). Except for Butter and milk and cream not concentrated there was a decline in imports of other milk products compared to previous years.

India’s import of poultry products

As may be seen from the following table, India’s imports of poultry products attained a peak in 2006-07 (Rs. 14.46 crores) as compared to previous years. Live birds contributed the major share of imports accounting for over 75% share. Birds, eggs, in shell, fresh, preserved or cooked constituted over 17% of imports, while Processed egg products accounted for just over 5% of the net poultry imports.

India’s imports of meat and meat products

India’s import of meat and meat products have gone up from Rs. 190.32 lakhs in 2004-05 to Rs. 230.17 lakhs in 2006-07. Major share of imports during 2006-07 was contributed value added prepared meat offal (40%) followed by frozen swine meat (25%) and frozen goat meat (21%).

India’s imports of other animal products

The major imported items by India are Skin/hide, which accounts to nearly 37% of net import of animal products other than milk and meat products. This was followed by silk (35%) and wool (28%). The net import of these items has increased as compared to previous years and this reflected in the increase in net imports from Rs. 2,666 crores in 2004-05 to Rs. 4,544 crores during 2006-07.
