ANIMAL HUSBANDRY INFORMATIONProductionThe livestock sector in India produced 101 million tonnes of milk, 51 billion eggs, 45 million kg of wool and 2.3 million tonnes of meat in 2006-07. India ranks first in the world milk production, and is fifth in the world egg production. Dairy and dairy productsIndia is the largest producer of milk in the world. India’s milk production during 2006-07 was 1009 lakh tonnes. The per capita availability of milk has increased to 246 gm/day during 2006-07 from 202 gm/day in 1996-97. The requirement of milk in Kerala has increased from 23.65 lakh tonnes in 2002-03 to 24.53 lakh tonnes in 2006-07. The milk production in Kerala recorded a gradual increase from 20.1 lakh tonnes in 1993-94 to 27.18 lakh tonnes in 2001-02. But it decreased to 21.19 lakh tonnes in 2006-07.
