Turmeric - About the Crop



Area, production and productivity

India is a leading producer and exporter of turmeric in the world.  Turmeric is a very important spice in India, which produces nearly the whole world's crop and uses 80% of it.  The major turmeric producing states in India are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa.  India occupies a pride of place with an area of 145.6 thousand hectares producing 506.8 thousand tonnes.  Andhra pradesh stands first in the country with an area of 58.5 thousand hectares producing 233.9 thousand tonnes during 2003-04.

During 2003-2004, the country produced 5, 06,800 tonnes of turmeric from an area of 1, 45,600 ha of which Kerala's share is less than 2%. The area, production and productivity of turmeric from the state during 2001-02 to 2004-05 are presented below.
