COCONUTArea, Production & ProductivityCoconut is grown in 93 countries covering an area of 12.8 million hectares with an annual production of 10.9 million tonnes of copra equivalent. India is the third largest producer of coconut in the world with about 22% share. Indonesia and Philippines are the top two producers with a share of 27% and 23% each. In India, coconut is grown in an area of 1.95 million ha. producing 14811 million nuts with a per hectare productivity of 7608 nuts. Kerala's share in area as well as production of coconut in the country is declining over time. The share of area declined from 57 per cent in 1991-92 to 46 per cent in 2005-06, while share of area in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu together increased from 29 per cent in 1992-93 to 39 per cent in 2005-06.Area, Production and Productivity of major producing States in India
With a coverage of 8.71 lakh ha, coconut occupies 41 per cent of the net cropped area and provides livelihood to over 3.5 million families in Kerala. Production increased by 5.4 percent in 2005-06 compared to the previous year and declined by 4.3 per cent in 2006-07 compared to previous year. The average productivity has slightly declined in 2006-07 by 1.3 per cent to 6951 nuts/ha compared to 2005-06. The productivity levels in Kerala are also lower than other major producing states. Productivity of coconut in Kerala has shown an increase during the period 2000-2005 whereas that in India shows a reverse pattern during the same period. In Kerala, the average productivity has slightly declined in 2006-07 by 1.3 per cent to 6951 nuts/ha compared to 2005-06.
