The unit price of small cardamom declined steadily from Rs 487.71 per kg. in 2003-04 to Rs 366.31 in 2004-05 and to Rs 338.57 in April-may 2005-06

Factors Influencing Cardamom Prices

  1. Freshness, colour, aroma and size are the major factors that influence cardamom prices, in addition to the current supply-demand scenario.
  2. Cardamom stored in cooler areas preserving its inherent properties attracts higher prices.
  3. Indian cardamom especially Alleppey Green is a premium grade against all other international grades.
  4. Variations in the year wise production and export from other countries especially, Guatemala has profound influence on Indian cardamom prices.
  5. Weather parameters influence annual production through yield variations, which influence market price.
  6. Year ending stocks and stocks-to-consumption ratio.
    • Time of arrival of new crop in the market.
    • Variations in demand by the food processing industry
