Area, production and productivity

Global Scenario

•  Guatemala, India, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, El Salvador, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Papua New Guinea are the major cardamom growing countries.

•  World production of cardamom is estimated at 30000 –35000 MT.

•  Guatemala produces nearly two-third of the global cardamom production. Its production has increased significantly from 13500 MT in 2002 to 23000 MT in 2004.

•  Area under cardamom cultivation in Guatemala and Sri Lanka is about 40000 and 4000 ha respectively.

The total area under the crop in India is estimated as 73,725 ha as on 2004-05 which is spread over Kerala (56%), Karnataka (37%) and Tamil Nadu (7%). Major cardamom growing district in Kerala is Idukki, which accounts about 79% of the total area in Kerala.
