Banana - About the Crop


Area, production and productivity

Bananas and plantains constitute a major staple food crop for millions of people in developing countries.

In 2005, India led the world in banana production, representing approximately 23% of the worldwide crop, most of which was for domestic consumption. This place of pride is achieved from within an area of 15% of the world harvested area under banana. The other four leading banana exporting countries were Ecuador, Costa Rica, Philippines and Colombia, which accounted for about two-thirds of the world's exports, each exporting more than 1 million tonnes.

During 2005-2006 Kerala produced 4,91,823 tonnes of banana from an area of 61,400 ha. The area, production and productivity of banana from the state during 2001-02 to 2004-05 are presented below.
