Arecanut



Area, production, productivity

The important arecanut growing countries of the world are Srilanka, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Singapore, Myanmar and India. In India, Kerala, Karnataka, and Assam are the three major arecanut-producing states. Apart from these states arecanut farming is also carried out in Meghalaya, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Karnataka accounts for nearly 40% of total arecanut production followed by Kerala (25%) and Assam (20%). The area under arecanut is estimated to be 3.81 lakh ha yielding about 4.83 lakh tonnes of nuts. National level area, production and productivity of arecanut are given below.

During 2005-06, Kerala produced 1.19 lakh tonnes of arecanut accounting for nearly 25% of national arecanut production. However, the productivity from the state was below that of the national level. The area, production and productivity of arecanut from Kerala during 2000-01 to 2006-07 are presented below.
